More beds are promised. Your family still needs a plan.

B.C.’s new government has promised to work toward treatment on demand: detox right away, then treatment and support without long waits. That is good news. But a bed only helps if your loved one says yes and goes.

What has been promised

  • More detox, treatment, recovery housing and aftercare, including in rural areas
  • Immediate detox, medications that work, and residential and outpatient programs
  • Links to housing, work, primary care and family support during recovery
  • Care plans for people leaving treatment or jail

Why a plan still matters

  • They still have to say yes. Most people refuse help at first. An intervention gives the family one clear moment to ask.
  • Not every program fits. Programs differ in length, approach, cost and who they serve.
  • Timing matters. When they say yes, the bed needs to be ready that day.
  • Recovery doesn’t end at discharge. Aftercare and family support make it last.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is treatment on demand?

Getting detox and treatment right away when someone is ready, without long waits. B.C.’s new government has promised to work toward it.

Does treatment on demand mean my loved one will go?

No. More beds help, but most people still need to agree to go. An intervention helps them say yes.

How do we choose a treatment program?

Look at length, approach, cost, who it serves and what happens after. Craig helps families compare options and is independent of any one centre.

When will more beds open?

No dates or numbers have been announced yet. Craig can help you find a bed now.

I was struggling with alcohol addiction, and I was not willing to get help. He talked with my family, drove all the way from Vancouver Island to Kelowna to pick me up, sat with me and talked me into going to Together We Can for treatment. Because of him, I went.
